2,363 dogs adopted and counting!

Where do your dogs come from?

We have dogs come to us from all over Canada and the United States, but they all have one thing in common – they are all unwanted dogs. Whether they come to us through a rescue mission at a high-kill shelter, through a breed rescue organization, or directly from an owner who wants a better life for their dog, they’re all looking for a loving forever home.

Why do you bring dogs up from the United States? Don’t we have enough abandoned animals in Canada to worry about first?

That’s a great question and we absolutely agree – helping at home comes first! In recent years, we have seen a drastic increase in the demand for small dogs in Canada, however, we are now getting to the point where people who are looking for small dogs have to resort to purchasing from a breeder. On one hand, it’s a great thing to see – drastically decreasing numbers of abandoned or unwanted dogs in Canada. On the other hand, there is still very high demand for small dogs in Canada, yet in other places, small dogs, and dogs of all sizes, are being euthanized daily. Our solution to this is simple – connect the unwanted, abandoned, and stray dogs, locally and abroad, with the Canadians who are seeking out a new furry friend!

What if I want to adopt a dog who is NOT spayed or neutered?

Our mission is to put ourselves out of business by eliminating the problem of abandoned and unwanted dogs. If our dogs were to go and make more dogs, we really wouldn’t be helping to solve that problem. All of our dogs are adopted to their new homes once they have been spayed or neutered, or with a guarantee and follow up that your new puppy will be spayed or neutered as soon as they are old enough to do so.

What are your adoption fees? Where does the money go?

Our adoption fees range from by donation to $875 plus GST. These adoption fees cover almost all of our expenses, from veterinary bills and vaccinations, to fuel for our mobile adoption events and rescue missions.

We operate on a user pay system, meaning our entire shelter operation is supported by adoption fees, surrender fees, and donations. If you would like to donate to our operations to aid in continuing to save lives, please send us an email or use our contact form.

Why don’t you have more information to provide in the dog’s profile?

Many of our dogs have come to us without any history or information at all. We do our best to provide some information about our experiences with each dog, however, often times dogs act differently in new or uncomfortable situations, so their behaviour at the shelter is not necessarily how they will act in a relaxed, loving, home environment. The best way for you to find out more about a particular dog is for you to arrange an appointment or drop in during open hours to come and evaluate them for yourself.

I emailed/called and I haven’t heard back yet. What gives?

Thanks for trying to get in touch with us! We apologize that you haven’t heard back yet. We have limited time and resources available to us, so there isn’t always a lot of time to answer phone calls and emails. Our primary concern is the care and welfare of the animals, and so that is where we dedicate the vast majority of our time. That being said, we want to help you to meet your new forever friend! If you’ve called or left us a voicemail message, please send us an email instead – it’s the easiest form of communication for us. If you’ve emailed and still haven’t heard back, please be patient. We do our best to get through all the emails each day, but sometimes they can get away from us. If it has been over a week and you haven’t heard back, please politely send us over a reminder email and we’ll do our best to get back to you as soon as possible.

I have been denied adoption but I’m still interested in adopting my next pet. What can I do from here?

We are so glad to hear that you are determined to adopt a previously neglected or unwanted dog rather than purchase one from a breeder. If you have been denied adoption through CARES, that doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be able to adopt through us in the future. Although you could potentially make a great home for a dog, there are many reasons that your adoption application may have been denied. Perhaps the specific dog you were interested in wasn’t best suited to your home or lifestyle; or perhaps our Adoption Team didn’t feel that you had completed enough research to be thoroughly prepared for what adopting a dog entails. Whatever the reason may be, we encourage you to patiently seek feedback regarding your application, in a non-confrontational manner. If there are things you can do to better prepare for a future adoption application, we will be happy to go through those things with you as time permits.

Whether your adoption application is successful through CARES or another organization, we highly encourage you to continue seeking an avenue to adopt, rather than purchase, your next pet.
